Traditional Family Food

Sometimes you forget how important little things can be. I started this blog years ago to pass down some family favorites to my daughter and daughter in laws. Now I have added granddaughters to that list as well as my readers here. Over time life has gotten in the way of me keeping it updated.

Yesterday I was reminded just how important it is to add things here.  Even if it is just something simple to keep the blog active.

One of my great grandson's, yes I said great grandson's, I have four of them.  Anyway, the one in question will turn one at the end of this month. His mom, my granddaughter messaged me and ask for the chocolate gravy recipe.  It's a timeless recipe passed down from my Mom. Of course I gave it to her. She wanted to see if he liked it before she started her own first family tradition. Which of course he loved it! I don't know very many children who don't love chocolate. Starting on his first birthday she plans on making him chocolate gravy for his breakfast every year. We have food traditions in our family. His momma always gets spinach dip. Her Dad gets a pinch cake. They all have their family favorites. It's a great way to keep each generation connected to the next.

While my granddaughter and I were talking yesterday I ask if I had included that recipe in a recipe book I had given her one year for Christmas. She said she wasn't sure. I had only hand written a few in a book and including the URL for this blog. She said her book had somehow gotten wet during a move. I ask her if she would like to do a Christmas redo and use index cards and a file box instead. She was excited and looking forward to it. What a great idea for Christmas gifts or even a wedding gift. Plus if I keep this blog active they will always have the recipes here should something happen. Who knows, when something happens to me maybe one of them will pick up writing to keep it alive for generations to come.

Daddy's Meatballs

I don't know where my son found this simple little recipe but it has turned into a family favorite. Those of you who follow my blog know how I love easy

2 bags of meatballs (cook as directed on bag) or 2 packs of cocktail weenies
1 8oz jar of grape jelly
1  14oz bottle of ketchup

Combine jelly and ketchup in crock pot then add meatballs or weenies and cook for an hour. They should be hot and the sauce tangy. You can also trade the ketchup for BBQ sauce. Quick and easy, makes a great Saturday afternoon snack while you are watching the ball game.

Retirement and Blogging

I have been retired for a while, yet I still have a hard time finding the time to blog.  I am going to try to do better.  My granddaughter who will turn 16 in January ask for a cookbook of all my recipes for Christmas. So it looks like I have a project to work on.  I think it would be neat to give all my granddaughters a cookbook for Christmas.  I am going to try and post my progress on the project here as well as making the time to add new recipes to this blog.  Wish me luck and I look forward to getting back involved with my blogs.

Peanutbutter Protein Bars

The following recipe can be modified to suite you taste.  My family loves them!

2 Cups Sugar
1 Tablespoon Vanilla
1 stick of butter
1 Cup peanut butter
1/2 Cup milk
3 Cups Oatmeal (I use the one minute oats)
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup cranrasins
1/2 cup almonds
1 heaping scoop of protein powder (your choice of flavor)

In a large bowl combine oatmeal, raisins, cranberries, almonds and protein powder.  In a saucepan melt butter and blend in remaining ingredients. Bring ingredients to a full boil for 1 1/2 minutes.  Pour contents over your dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.  Pour into a non-greased 9x12 pan and allow to cool.  Cut
into squares and you have a great treat.
